How to prepare for a painting estimate
The information that helps a painting contractor understand your property and prepare a useful scope.
A useful painting estimate begins with a shared understanding of the property and the work. Before the visit, note whether the project is interior or exterior, list the rooms or surfaces involved, and gather a few photos of current conditions.
Describe the property and access
Share the city, property type, occupancy, parking or access constraints, and any business hours or household needs that affect scheduling.
Identify the surfaces
Call out walls, ceilings, trim, siding, stucco, woodwork, decks, fences, or specialty surfaces. Mention peeling, staining, previous repairs, or moisture concerns so they can be evaluated in person.
Compare written scopes
When comparing estimates, check whether each one addresses protection, preparation, repair assumptions, primers and coatings, number of coats, exclusions, cleanup, and the final walk-through. Price is easier to understand when the scope is clear.
